Synopsis Details Reviews Similar Items Screenings
Beyond Time, narrated by Jude Law, tells the story of the life and work of one of Britain's greatest living artists, William Turnbull. Widely respected as both a sculptor and painter, Turnbull's modernism stands in stark contrast to the rigidity and formality of the British art scene he encountered as a young artist. Beyond Time explores Turnbull's unerring self-belief and strict adherence to his principles through an extended period of rampant commercialism in the arts. Having served as a pilot during the 2nd World War, Turnbull was one of the first artists to benefit from the spatial perspective of seeing the earth from above which was to have a profound effect on his work as an artist. The film follows Turnbull's journey from fledgling artist visiting Giacometti and Brancusi's studios in 1940's Paris, to his involvement with the artists that created Pop Art and put the ICA on the map in London in the ‘50s through to New York where he befriended and worked alongside Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman. Beyond Time gives a unique first hand account of the pivotal moments in the development of modern art from the post war period through to the present day and features intimate and unprecedented access to many of the most respected minds in the world of art. Features contributions from Antony Gormley, Richard Hamilton, Peter Blake, Barry Flanangan, Brian Wall, Sir Nicholas Serota, Tim Marlow, Matthew Collins, Lord Alistair McAlpine, Ambassador Donald Blinken and many others.
