Chris Cunningham's career as a music video director began in 1995 when, aged twenty-five and passionate about music, Chris met and persuaded Autechre to let him direct a promo for a track entitled "Second Bad Vilbel." Following on from this video, Chris was soon working with a range of artists during the early days of his career, waiting for that all-important track that would allow him the opportunity to create the images for the music that truly excited him.

In August 1997 Chris realized a long-term desire to collaborate with Richard James (the Aphex Twin) and directed the video for the single "Come to Daddy" through the production company RSA / Black Dog Films who he had recently joined. Not only did this video change the face of music videos, it catapulted his name into the public. Needless to say the video has since won a plethora of awards and accolades including the MCM grand prix du jury 1997.

Such was the success of this video that the next three years of Chris's life was spent immersed in creating some of the most hypnotic, dark, humorous and downright rude videos the industry had ever enjoyed. Not only did he work again with Aphex producing the soft porn flick, (at least as close as a video would allow) "Windowlicker," he directed the comic book caper for Squarepusher's "Come On My Selector" single.

In addition to his favoured electronica music, he also directed videos for more mainstream artists including Portishead, "Only You," Leftfield featuring Afrika Bambaataa, "Afrika Shox" and Madonna, "Frozen." Also, during this period, Chris dipped his toe in and out of ad land, creating a number of distinguished commercials, but it was clear his preferred medium was music.

In 1999, Chris set about undertaking what has become one of the most memorable music videos created, Bjork's, "All Is Full Of Love." Some two years after its release, this is still one of the most sort after videos for music, film, art events and galleries around the world. It is fitting that such a piece of work bring to a close an extremely hectic and rewarding passage of his varied career.

Looking to produce work that otherwise would never see the light of day within the confines of music videos, Chris, commissioned by the Anthony D'Offay Gallery, directed what is wildly considered an extreme study of love, anatomy, sex and violence entitled, "flex." This was accompanied by "Monkey Drummer."

Chris is currently locked away concentrating on producing a DVD title consisting of a collection of original works in both sound and picture, along with the odd musical collaboration with the likes of old favourites Aphex Twin and Squarepusher with an intended release of end of 2003 beginning 2004. In addition, he's developing a feature film.
