When we last left our hero hanging out on the pages of www.homestarrunner.com, Strong Bad had just finished reading and responding to the first 100 emails he ever received comprising the hilarious Strongbad_email.exe: The First 100 Emails DVD. Disc Four picks right up where the action left off.
Like most evil characters, Strong Bad talks the talk, is a criminal mastermind, and is veeerrrryy popular with the ladies (including the 128 Hot Katies). Of course he then wakes up and finds out most of his life is spent putting up with the rest of the Homestar Runner cast including his brother Strong Sad, pet The Cheat, The King of Town, and of course Homestar Runner himself. Instead of an evil villain, Strong Bad provides quite a bit of comic relief for the entire site. What makes Strong Bad even more likeable is the fact that he appears to be a kid living at home with his parents.
And thus spoke the "fans". Flooding the site with emails addressed to Strong Bad. Of course Strong Bad has to respond with too the point blunt responses. For example, when someone wrote in to inquire about becoming a radio announcer, Strong Bad creates a simple catch phrase and proceeds to demonstrate how various formats would deliver the statement – with hilarious results.
If a "viewer" writes in with poor grammar and punctuation, it is like have a target on the forehead, as Strong Bad will make fun of the person to no end. Of course anytime he has the chance to brag about his ultra coolness, he’ll take the time to respond accordingly.
"Viewer": Dear Strong Bad, how do I become like Strong Bad?
Strong Bad: First paint your head red. Then take your shirt off to expose your manly chest. Next, get some boxing gloves, or if you don't have boxing gloves, oven mitts will do. Next, duct tape some aluminum foil to some twine. And finally, get your mom to make you a Strong Bad costume. You'll be the belle of the ball.
Strong Bad wouldn’t be where he is without the creative talent of Matt and Mike Chapman. During the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Mike Chapman and his friend Craig Zobel created a children’s book poking fun of the low quality children’s stories of the time. Flash forward to 1999 where Mike was learning to animate with Flash and decided to use the original characters from the book. Matt provided the voices, and they put everything up on a website where it has taken off and has become one of the most popular animated series on the Net.
Besides emails 101-130 (which you can still access online), what else does this DVD contain that would make you drop .00 for this Region Free collection? Besides the two hours of Strong Bad funny business, all the easter eggs and hidden scenes are intact, along with 2 Karaoke videos for you to sing along to. For fans of puppet Strong Bad, there are a few of those sprinkled throughout the disc and a “behind the scenes” look at the making of an animated short. Did I mention Matt and Mike have a commentary track? I just did? Well there you go then...
What’s bad? Well, the “behind the scenes” is a bit misleading, and I would have liked for The Brothers Chap to have included other bonus features like more puppet Strong Bad, and other cartoon shorts from their site like Strong Bad’s own Teen Girl Squad. Those kinds of extras go a long way in fan appreciation.
If you like humor of the absurd, then you should go to the Homestar Runner site and check out a few of the emails. Then, buy the DVD to show your friends. I give this DVD a 4.5 out of 5 Stars |
