ART:21- ART IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY offers new definitions of art and demonstrates its profound relevance. Meet 37 diverse U.S. artists in this Emmy-nominated series. Viewers go into studios, homes, and communities for an intimate view of artists' lives, creative processes, and sources of inspiration. Each program profiles three to five artists, from painters, photographers, and sculptors to performance and video artists.

In the 21st century, American artists are taking self-expression into uncharted territory. Using various media and techniques, drawing on pop culture, politics, ethnic heritage, classical models, and personal life experiences, today's artists engage the world in surprising new ways. This look at the direction of contemporary American art profiles 21 emerging and established artists, to see them at work and to hear what they hope to accomplish.

The second season book interviews Trenton Doyle Hancock, Do-Ho Suh, Kara Walker and Kiki Smith ("Stories"); Gabriel Orozco, Martin Puryear, Collier Schorr, and Janine Antoni; ("Loss and Desire"); Elizabeth Murray, Raymond Pettibon, Eleanor Antin, and Walton Ford ("Humor"); and Vija Clemins and Paul Pfeiffer ("Time"). In texts taken from sessions with producer Susan Sollins, the artists talk about their work in home or work environments.
