Group portraits were popular during the 17th century and we wanted to create something similar, yet in our version there is a bit of brawl among the goldsmiths. In this filmic piece of art, we have based the whole set-up on one prominent 17th century artist, Thomas de Keyser and his painting - The syndics of the Amsterdam Goldsmith's Guild, c.1627. In the original work, each goldsmith looks directly at the viewer, with no single head claiming prominence over another. Although the inspiration to let the actors wear hats came from Rembrandt van Rijn and his painting - The Syndics of the Clothmakers' Guild, c.1662.

Again, building on the portrait style of the Baroque era we have crafted a work where a woman becomes frightened of something coming into the tranquil room where she sits.
The major influence for the arrangement was Nicolaes Eliasz Pickenoy and his painting Portrait of Johanna Le Maire, c.1622, showing a bourgeoisie woman with authority dressed in a beautiful dress. Moreover, Anthony van Dyck and his Portrait of a Flemish lady, c.1618-1621 also inspired us with another example of beautiful garment. However, we wanted our character to be seated by a table and used Thomas de Keyser and his Portrait of a lady, c.1632 as inspiration.

Portrait of a Prominent Scientist directed by

Drawing on the common portrait paintings of the 17th century, we have created a work that brings the traditional scene of a prominent scientist to life that becomes surprised at the lack of gravity.
In this set-up no particular painting was used as the sole inspiration, rather it was a blend of paintings that inspired us. We used Thomas de Keyser and his painting Portrait of a gentleman, c.1632 as a basis for us. Thomas de Keyser was one of the most popular portrait painters of his time and gave us the idea of a man sitting on a chair. Still, we wanted the man to be older more like Frans Hals - Portrait of an elderly man from c.1627-1630 and have a bit more of an intellectual touch as in Rembrandt van Rijn's painting - A Scholar, c.1631. Our inspiration to have our character wearing a hat also came from Rembrandt and his painting - The Amsterdam Merchant Nicolaes Ruts, c.1631. The idea to have our character sitting in a grand chair came from Diego Velázguez - Portrait of Pope Innocent X, c.1650; and the inspiration to use an old-fashioned wooden globe also came from Velázguez and his painting - Democritius, c.1628-1629.

Building on the still life paintings of the Baroque era we have created a set-up with fish and lobster that suddenly come to life.
In this work we were inspired by Jan Davidsz De Heem - Still life with lobster and nautilus cup, c.1634; Abraham van Beyeren (Abraham van Beijeren) - Banquet Still Life, c.1660; and Frans Snyder - A Banquet-piece, c.1620.
