The newly released “Earth From the Air” DVD is a compilation of the fascinating photographs taken by photographer Yann Arthus- Bertrand on his extensive world travels. Creating an aerial portrait of the globe, Bertrand has flown over hundreds of countries, snapping beautiful and thought- compelling pictures along the way. The subject matter of the photographs ranges from industrial architecture to exotic animals to natural wonders to the human struggle, and each image is as compelling as the next. The photographer’s goal is to inspire a deeper understanding and appreciation of Planet Earth in the face of the climate and population boom crisis, and he effectively reaches his audience through this DVD, supplementing his message with frequent written passages that elegantly fade into the screen in between scenes. Most feature statistics meant to, at best, elicit shock in the viewer, at worst, interest her. With blurbs like “20% of the world population consumes 80% of the world energy”, “1.6 billion people are overweight (of which 400 million are obese), 820 million are chronically undernourished”, and “1 in 4 species of mammal, 2 in 5 species of amphibian, 1 in 8 species of bird are endangered”, Bertrand captures his audiences’ attention in more ways than one. And with 8 hours of beautiful imagery on one disk, you can transform your TV or computer into an art form, and hopefully your mind into one more understanding of the Earth’s plight.

Earth from the Air is what is often referred to as an "ambient" disc, meaning that it's not a documentary as much as something you simply set to play for mood, sort of like background music with images. The material here is eight hours of aerial photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand's most dazzling images - hypnotic, poetic visuals that define the natural and human world as no other contemporary photographer or filmmaker. Unfortunately, one can't help but imagine how much more stunning this stuff would be in Blu-ray high-definition.

Earth From the Air is not a story or narrative, but a series of images. The cinematographer/photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand has assembled literally what the title states. Images of land, water, animals, people, vegetation, and human-made structures unfold, some near and some far, one after the other. Viewers will appreciate his technique and wonder how he captured the images.
Options are given to enable the images to stay on screen for one, three, or five minutes, or to go fast forward; a loop playback is also available. It is to be used on DVD players and may not work on computers. The DVD does provide a test at the beginning for aspect ratio.
The approximately 120 images are a riot of color, pattern, and space. The colors—brilliant blues, greens, yellows, and even black-and-white—are dazzling. The patterns of animals, vegetation, rivers, boats, highways, and more are awe-inspiring. Arthus-Bertrand reportedly flew over many countries to find the portraits of nature and humankind he photographed.
About every fifth image is a white-on-black sentence that contains a message or statistics about the environment. A screen at the end provides two websites for further information. More than just a collection of pretty pictures, this is a message to viewers to protect the earth.
This DVD is recommended for college or community education classes in art, ecology, or photography, or for any interested group for discussion purposes. Public libraries will also want to consider purchasing. It could also be used as a wallpaper background on a television screen.
For something different and awe-inspiring, this collection of images is top-rate.
